VEGA BABY SETS RELEASE FOR DAVE NAVARRO’S ‘MOURNING SON’
True Crime Documentary slated for a VOD release on December 1, 2015
Vega Baby announced today the acquisition of North American VOD rights to the Dave Navarro true crime biographical documentary MOURNING SON, which was directed by Todd Newman. The film was written by former Jane’s Addiction guitarist Navarro and Newman, and was produced by Navarro, Newman and Larissa Swan. A digital release date has been set for December 1, 2015.
Unbeknownst to most people, Dave Navarro is a trauma survivor of the highest order. When Dave was only 15 years old, his mother Constance was brutally murdered by her estranged ex-boyfriend. For 8 long years, Dave's mother's killer eluded capture while Dave dealt with his deepest, darkest fears through drugs, art and escapism. In a heartbreaking, inspirational journey, Dave confronts the events that changed his life forever. Through revelations from friends and family, to the cold hard facts from police and FBI agents, Dave attempts to come to terms with his mother's senseless murder and the horrific realities of domestic violence.
Adam Ripp, CEO/President of Vega Baby, said: “MOURNING SON is a brilliantly crafted true crime documentary that feels like a real-life edge of your seat thriller. With their feature film debut, Todd and Dave have established themselves as truly gifted filmmakers. It’s an honor and a privilege to be part of this incredible documentary.”
Dave Navarro said, “I wanted to make Mourning Son for several reasons. Creating from a visceral and vulnerable place through linear story telling would allow me to delve deeper into my mother's history. Sharing my experiences could serve as a tool to help those who have survived the trauma of losing a family member to murder... or loss of any kind for that matter. Many of us invent our own coping skills. Mourning Son is my journey of discovering which of these mechanisms might send me further into suffering and which would help me recover and heal.”
Todd Newman said, “My objective as a filmmaker, first and foremost, is to convey a compelling story, especially one that carries a message. Mourning Son is a story that has the promise of carrying multiple messages from devastation and despair to hope and healing. Filming a documentary is a monumental task. Directing one that involves a person so close to you as the main character makes for a precarious dynamic that forces one to walk a fine line between director and best friend. 6 years in the making, potential perils and pitfalls are the price. The payoff is a deeper understanding and a learning experience about oneself and in humanity that is paralleled by no other.”
“How Mourning Son would be presented to the public was not an easy decision. From our first introduction, Vega Baby understood our objectives and concerns with a film of such a personal nature. Their passion for Mourning Son was matched by our own. Their dedication to the film made our partnership a natural fit.”
The deal for the rights was brokered by Adam Ripp of Vega Baby and by attorney Jeff Silberman on behalf of the filmmakers.
