This being my first summary of my first week of doing this event I will say I still haven't grasped the point system cause to me I am not that good at keeping track of the point system cause well when you watch one too many movies in a week everything starts to blur together and I have to rely on my shoddy math skills on Sunday morning. Man I need coffee.....
Day 1: Sunday Oct. 4th
Movie #1: Terror At London Bridge (1985)
I jumped blindly into a film that I never heard of but found on my Amazon instant player. Secretly its cause I saw David Hasselhoff and was like why the hell not its not likes its Baywatch meets Dracula.
Hasselhoff plays a detective whose past is marred by a accidental shooting a teenager that causes him to leave his original gig to become a cop somewhere else at the same time that the London Bridge is on loan to Lake Havasu City, Arizona. But the past of this bridge is said to be the place where Jack the Ripper was stopped and killed but fell into the water below it. As you guess it blood re-awakens the Ripper and he continues his slaying ways but history repeats itself by the end of the film and ends as it began. Will there be a sequel? 30 years later I doubt it.
(Normal points 2. Bonus elements: Supernatural fog=3, killer reveals self at night=3, My rating is a 2.5 out of 5.)
Movie #2: Mimic (1997)
My second film is a movie I've been wanting to revisit for so long but never found the time to do so until last Sunday when I said let's do it. I was 17 when it came out and saw it in theaters with a few friends and I still remember being slightly scared by the fact that scientist could possibly do this. Mira Sorvino plays a evolution biologist who creates a super bug called "Judas" to help eliminate a cock roach born disease that's laying waste to the child population. But deep in the dark sewer and subway systems the "Judas" bugs evolve into the next stage to attack their prey, us. They develop camouflage like human faces and vital organs to be amongst us until the conclusion comes to killing the only male of the breed. As you guessed this film spawned 2 sequels and this even featured a young Norman Reedus!!!!
(Normal points 2 +ATB=6, Bonus Elements: Subway Tunnel=3, Creature reveals self at night=3. My rating 3 out of 5.)
Movie #3: Night of the Lepus (1972)
My final film for the night before the only television show I watched that night was this '72 cult classic about killer rabbits. In the vains of Food of the Gods, Empire of the Ants or any giant creature feature this film was down right a little hard to take seriously cause its giant rabbits roaming around at night picking people off. But hey they had Bones from Star Trek but dammit he wasn't a doctor here he was a college president? Rabbits soon find out that they aren't the dominant species as they become future dinners at the end of the movie and everything returns to normal in Arizona. This movie was laughable at best but that's the only thing I can say about it.
(Normal points 2. Bonus elements: Cave scene=3, creature reveals itself at night=3. My rating is 2 out of 5.)
TV Show: Fear The Walking Dead: Season 1 Finale (2015)
To me the show started slow and stayed that way til the third episode where it picked up but fell dead by falling back on that slow pace. By the final episode I was already debating on whether or not this show will remain in my normal viewing schedule or end up on my Netflix queue later on down the road. The finale came off decent but I felt that the slow pace of the whole show killed it for me and left me wondering why they made this show with the intentions of not explaining a lot of things. Leaving the show on a cliff hanger, the killing of a character who had ties to main characters and the great wide open of where the hell are they going to go from here? All I know is the end was the best part of the whole first season, will I be back on board when season 2 hits AMC no clue but I know my kid is hooked.
(Normal points 1)
Day 2: Monday Oct. 5th
Movie #4: Paganini Horror (1989)
My work schedule conflicts some what with this event by causing me to only limit my week viewing to a movie or two a night. Monday I got lucky with 2. Paganini Horror is Luigi Cozzi's final film and its very laughable at best. Its silly because there are more plot holes in this thing than the entire series of Lost. Granted there are some good kill scenes and blood splatter this film is just a little hard to watch if you want plot. Donald Pleasance appears in this film and though being a great actor is just walking around practically playing himself in the film which is sad but what do you expect from this film.
(Normal points 2. Bonus elements: Basement=3, character falls into pit=3, ghostly fog=3, ghostly lightning=3. My rating is 2 out of 5.)
Movie #5: Nightlight (2015)
The fifth film I watched I had to borrow from Shawn who reviewed this for us over the summer. The film is your typical found footage flick that centers around a cursed wooded area where a friend went to commit suicide and his spirit now haunts this place. One by one it kills the group of friends who are playing the game they set out to do. Unlike some found footage films there were some points in the film that I found a little terrifying if it was to happen to me or anyone in real life. But in the end its just like Paranormal Activity and it leaves a weak after taste.
(Normal points 2. Bonus elements: POV camera=3, power outage=3 supernatural presence=3 My rating 3 out of 5.)
Day 3: Tuesday Oct. 6th
Movie #6: Deadly Eyes (1982)
I remember watch this movie when I was kid and forgot about it til Scream Factory released it awhile back and I bought it and held off watching it. Pretty much wanted to throw it out there for a movie night but those days passed on and I figured why not for this event. Who doesn't love giant rats eating people? I sure as hell do because lets face its not like we get these movies anymore like we did the 80's. But bad costumes for the rats which were actually dogs and a terrible story which was based on James Herbert's novel "The Rats" the movie was the only horror movie for the production company that made it and well I saw why.
(Normal points 2. Bonus elements: Subway tunnel=3, Creature attacks at night=3, My rating 2 out of 5.)
Movie #7: The Creeping Flesh (1973)
Now on our page/site we are doing our event All Hallow's Eve which is our version of 31 Days of Horror. I tend to take it to the next level and watch the movies that are picked because I can't help but do it cause as a film fan you have to see it all. Creeping Flesh to me is not one of my favorite films that star Christopher Lee & Peter Cushing but I tolerated it. Corinne picked a classic for sure but to me the film is a classic bore. She'll kill me for that but we have different taste in films and I respect her pick by not crapping all over it.
(Normal points 2. Bonus element: supernatural presence=3. My rating is 2 out of 5.)
Day 4: Wednesday Oct. 7th
Movie #8: Phantom of the Paradise (1974)
I was originally going to watch Rocky Horror but I second guessed it because I had already watched it the week prior to this event and I want to watch something different each day. SO I went with this film which I missed out on at Exhumed Films 24 Hour Horrorthon a few years back. The film is a combination of different stories and thrown together to make this musical thriller. After watching this I see why its beloved as a cult classic and deserves to be seen by anyone whose never saw it. I met Gerrit Graham last year and he autographed a picture from this film for me and he told me out of all his stuff that the pic I picked he had not signed yet that weekend. So enough about my story and go see this.
(Normal points 2. Bonus elements: Hidden passages=3. 4 out of 5.)
Day 5: Thursday Oct. 8th
Movie #9: House (1986)
I love this film. I don't know what it is about this movie but it has stuck with me for the longest time in my life. I could've hugged the hell out of Bobby for picking this for AHE. The film is so bat shit crazy that you can't be disappointed with it. You are literally given everything in this movie from monsters to Richard Moll and George Wendt. Literally this movie was the highlight of my week cause work sucked so bad by this day that I literally needed this one film to make me come back from wanting to jump into the river.
(Normal points 2. Bonus elements: Supernatural force=3, Creature reveals itself from darkness=3, character forcefully enters sinister unknown=3. rating 4 out of 5.)
Day 6: Friday Oct. 9th
Outside Event: NEW YORK COMIC CON 2015
As a group we strived to be the best or better ourselves whatever came first. But when we were accepted by this con to take that next step to the big time it was great to be able to put our name out there with fresh faces. Day 1 we took it all in just being able to walk around shaking hands with artist, vendors and various other members of the press who were more than willing to listen or talk to us on various subjects. We made new friends and a possible connection on taking the page and site to the next level in the future. I didn't get the chance to meet Kevin Conroy because by the time I found where autographs were being dealt out he was already at his panel. But I did meet Orlando Jones of Sleepy Hollow and the man was SUPER COOL. Joking with me and Shawn about the show, asking me how old my daughter was when I told him she was a huge fan of the show and ending our conversation telling him how I used his line from Evolution, "Mazel tov! It's a boy! " at work. He laughed and said thank you. All in all the first day was a memorable one but not so much for the train station trip back home. That itself was a horror show.
Movie #10: Serial Mom (1994)
This was Shawn's pick for the day of AHE and I made sure to watch it when I got home from NYCC. Between destroying my stomach with Taco Bell and my mind unwinding from the days events I really couldn't figure out if this film actually fit the rules of the event. I figured if it doesn't I won't get the points or will be given them but then again I was already brain dead to the world by the time I started watching Kathleen Turner kill people in her neighborhood. I like this film because its funny as all hell and stars Matthew Lillard in his first movie. Hands down it was a good way to end the night and go to bed before I fell through my living table from exhaustion.
(Normal points 2: I hope. my rating 3 out of 5.)
Day 7: Saturday Oct. 10th
TV Show: The Bastard Executioner (2015)
Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. (2015)
Gotham (2015)
Before we ventured back to the con I caught up on some DVR's that were lurking on my box and boy did I miss out on some shows during the week. Executioner I am still on the fence about because I think my Game of Thrones mindset doesn't want me to ruin that with this show but I will stay on task and watch it til I am truly bored with it. AoS I wasn't pleased with the first season, season 2 brought me back and now season 3 seems to be holding my attention now so I hope they do greater things with it. Gotham is well just badass and doesn't need explaining only that boy was I pissed about something that happened.
(Normal points 1 per show hour=3 points. Bonus Element (Bastard): Dungeon scene=3 points. (AoS): Character enters black hole willingly=9.)
Outside event: NYCC Day 2
Went back figuring the crowd would've died down a little bit. Nope just as bad if not worse than Friday with the sea of humanity. The cosplays were awesome, panels great and got more free swag. Ran out of business cards, had to place a new order this morning for fresh cards that will be coming soon. Let's say the new cards a more awesome than the original ones that disappeared. This is how I ended my week at this con, no movies were watched because when I got home I went out partied with some friends came home drunk and the hangover wasn't fun but I have to get back to business. Thanks for reading.
